Puzzling Power - Designing a puzzle for our game!
Hello everyone I'm Nate one of the programmers at Disgruntled Games working on our current title "Un-Abandon ware," and today I'm going to discuss the two of the puzzles for the game I designed!
*Warning will spoil puzzle solutions for the game if you haven't played the game yet!*
Puzzle 1 - The Power Puzzle
The first puzzle I wanted to show and discuss was the power puzzle where the player will need to rotate nodes within the grid to connect the green node to the red node.
This is a very simple yet fun puzzle, with each node being their own object within the power puzzle grid that can be expanded it brings this puzzle from just a simple puzzle to a Modular puzzle. It's modular allows for a variety of players from any skill level to not feel intimidated with it but can be built upon itself to create more complex instances of this puzzle.
Not only is it Modular it helps pull the player into the experience of our game, as the player navigates their way through the abandoned Power Plant these broken grids give the player an opportunity to affect the world around them in a way that keeps things new and thematic.
This puzzle was a fun challenge that I am proud to say came out really well and enhances the gameplay experience!
Puzzle 2 - Counting shapes and colors!
the other puzzle I wanted to show was our Colored Pipe Puzzle! In this puzzle the player needs a numeric code combo for a console but they are only shown a Colored Icon above each number input and they need to explore the room to find the solution!
To find the solution the player has to find all the pipes in the room with each icon and count them the total number of pipes with those individual icons is that icons digit in the code!
This puzzle does something I personally love, it asks the player to pay attention to their environment to find the solution. This pulls and keeps them focused on the environment their in, teaching them to think more critically about the details their environment is giving them which could hold information of the gameplay direction or even the game's story.
This puzzle will give players a fun challenge that won't be overwhelming, and will tie the art of our games assets and environment directly into our gameplay loop!
Thank you for reading this discussion! These two puzzles are amazing additions to our game and I'm proud of how each of them turned out! If you are interested in puzzles like this please check out Un-Abandoned Ware when it officially releases soon!
